Empire builders like Bill Gates and Sam Walton aren't just great businessmen. They are bona fide (добросовестные/настоящие) revolutionaries.
Self-made billionaires (миллиардеры, добившиеся успеха своими силами) don't dominate (подавляют/господствуют/доминируют) industries --they transform them and spawn (порождают/создают) new ones. That takes more than intelligence (для этого требуется не только интеллект), courage (отвага) and luck. It takes divine-like vision (предвидение свыше/данная богом интуиция/божественное откровение).
Billionaire entrepreneurs (предприниматели) are "not working within the confines (в рамках/в пределах) of the current market," says Gerald Kraines, chief executive of the Levinson Institute, a business consulting firm in Jaffey, N.H. "They're anticipating (упреждают/предвосхищают) things much further afield (вдалеке). You have to see spaces that no one else sees."
The world's self-made billionaires certainly (конечно же) have vision in spades (в изобилии; spade – лопата), spanning (охватывающее) everything from how computers work to how people shop. But the ability (способность) to see around corners isn't the only quality (качество) that separates (здесь: отличает) the very accomplished (состоявшихся профи, т.е. тех, кто способен заработать) from the stratospherically wealthy. "[Billionaire entrepreneurs] need a deep passion (глубокая страсть) and a point of view (точку зрения) about the future," says Peter Skarzynski, chief executive of Strategos, a Chicago-based consulting firm that advises global companies, including Nokia and Whirlpool. "They fundamentally (здесь: глубоко) believe that they have a better way to solve (лучший способ решить) a set of problems than how they're being solved now."
Billionaires also have a seemingly (кажущийся) ravenous (хищный) appetite for risk. It's hard enough for many of us to muster the courage (найти мужество) to abandon (оставить/покинуть/бросить) our cubicles (небольшие комнаты; слово обычно используется в значении «тесный офис») and start a small company, let alone (не говоря уже о) build an empire. Are you a born (прирожденный) billionaire? Before you tackle (энергично возьметесь за) a serious growth strategy and all its attendant hassles (сопутствующие трудности), ask yourself some hard questions at the outset (сначала), says executive psychologist Debra Condren, who has worked with big names like 3M, Chevron and Hewlett-Packard.
The most important one: Why go big at all (зачем вообще стремиться к большему)? Next, ask yourself if you are willing to make tough decisions (трудные/жесткие решения) for the growth of your company. If you're not comfortable supplanting (or firing) them (если вам неудобно выжить (уволить) их), stay small.
For entrepreneurs who prize (ценят) their independence, ask yourselves how much of it you're willing to give up (какой частью независимости вы готовы поступиться). As the demands mount (растут/увеличиваются), both your schedule and decisions become less your own; worse, you may have investors and board (правление)members to appease (которых придется ублажать/умиротворять).
"It becomes very hard for company founders (основателей) to accept that they are no longer the real boss," says Carl Robinson, a psychologist who works primarily (преимущественно) with growing, middle-market companies.
Like holding forth (разглагольствовать) in public? You'd better, because companies of any significant size need a public face. Entrepreneurs who thrive on public performances (хорошо справляются с публичными выступлениями) --weekly meetings, shareholder gripe sessions (встречах для выяснения отношений), even television interviews--have an easier time than those who shun the spotlight (избегают внимания общественности).
"You need to have the ability to fill a room and inspire (вдохновить) people," says Condren. If public speaking isn't your forte (сильная сторона), but you're still hankering (все же сильно желаете) to grow, find a confident substitute (уверенного помощника) who can sell your story.
Not only do you have to be able to communicate, you need a knack for (сноровка/умение) building consensus. In most cases, the bigger your business, the more input (вклад) you need from those around you--and that means being willing and able to marshal them to your cause (направлять их на общее дело).
In the end, chasing billionaire status--and not crashing along the way--is as much about knowing who you are as it is about knowing how to nab («поймать») new customers or manage inventory (материальными запасами). Who knows? Maybe a modest (скромные) $100 million might be a better fit (будет более подходящим вариантом).
