Terminal 5 Still a mess

THE horror that is Heathrow continues (ужас, который являет собой аэропорт Хитроу продолжается). The crowded airport's gleaming (мерцающий) new Terminal 5 opened on March 27th, and in its first eight days around 430 flights were cancelled and some 20,000 bags separated from their owners.
Blame (вина) has fallen on BA's staff, who were unprepared (неготов) for the big event. And the terminal's supposedly (якобы/предположительно) superfast baggage-handling equipment (оборудование по оформлению багажа) — for which BAA, the airport's heavily indebted owner (глубоко погрязший в долгах владелец), is also responsible (ответственен) —proved anything but efficient (оказалось далеко не эффективным). BA had already managed to score worse (добиться худшего результата/получить худшую оценку) than any other European airline in 2007 for losing or delaying (задержку) bags. After a week of misery (мучений), it has now decided to outsource (передать во внешний подряд) the problem of sorting (сортировки) and returning much of the current mountainous pile (громадной горы) to centres in Milan, Manchester and Edinburgh.
Most big new airport facilities (портовые службы) —not only in Britain—have teething problems (проблемы периода становления; дословно: проблемы прорезывания зубов), and BA claims to be getting on top of these (утверждает, что возьмет проблемы под контроль). It had cut the baggage backlog (незавершенные заказы) to 14,000 by April 3rd, for example. But the timing could not have been worse for the airline.
Those arguing for expanding (выступающие за расширение) the airport's runway capacity (пропускной способности взлетно-посадочной полосы) —mainly businesses and BA itself— have been made to look deluded (ввиду обстоятельств выглядят заблуждавшимися). The government has been pushing for (добивалось/поощряло) it and a decision is due (должно быть [принято]) soon, but meanwhile (тем временем) Ruth Kelly, the transport secretary (министр транспорта), has steered clear (избегает) of Terminal 5. The Conservatives, for their part, seem to have grown a bit more sceptical: on April 2nd their transport spokesman, Theresa Villiers, said that the case for expansion had not yet been made.
BA would do well to take note of (обратив внимание на) another development (здесь: событие) too. The transatlantic routes (машруты) from Heathrow are no longer the preserve of a select four airlines (больше не являются уделом исключительно избранных компаний). On March 31st Air France-KLM became the first European airline to begin service from Heathrow to America under the new “open skies” agreement—and at a very competitive price (по весьма привлекательным ценам). The ancient (старый) and clapped-out (потрепанный) Terminal 2, from which it flies, has never looked so inviting (притягательным).
