I started my MBA program, at a top notch (первоклассной/превосходной) business program, in the fall (осенью) of 1999. Although my heart was in the right place, before starting my MBA I didn't really understand the process in which MBAs are evaluated (оцениваются) and recruited (принимаются на работу) into the work force [число рабочих/кадровый состав]. At the time, my career goal (целью карьеры) was to join a venture capital firm upon graduation (после окончания учебного заведения), but I soon realized (осознал/понял) that given (учитывая) my law background (опыт) and lack of technical expertise (нехватку специальных/специализированных знаний) or connections (связей) to the industry landing such a job (получение такой работы) would be a pretty tough (довольно сложной) thing to do.

Instead (вместо этого), I decided to go for (добиваться) my number 2 option (вариант/возможность) and join a high-tech firm. I interviewed with a number (ряд) of firms - including (в т.ч.) the ill-fated (злополучную) Excite@Home which was a big name at the time - and received two offers for summer employment (предложения работы на лето). One for a finance position at Intel in a New Mexico facility (объекте), the other for a summer internship (стажировка) with a minor dotcom venture (небольшой Интернет-компании) that no one has heard of (and would never heard of in the future) in Denver, CO. Being that (так как) this was the dotcom bubble (Интернет-пузырь; значение термина и самого явления см - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot-com_bubble ), guess (догадайтесь) where I went? Tiny start-up (крохотная начинающая компания) here I come... it was a great summer and I really enjoyed spending time in the Mile High City. It remains (остается) one of my favorite places in the country and I still have many friends there.

After the summer, it was very clear that things were going south (дела ухудшались) very quickly for the Internet industry. My friends that had graduated from business school in the summer of 2000 where bombarded by job offers (были бомбардируемы предложениями о работе). A close friend received no less than (не менее) 7 offers for full time employment (работе на полный рабочий день). My graduating class would face a very different employment environment (должен был столкнуться с совершенно иной рабочей средой). I decided to put the high-tech company goal on-hold (поставить хай-тек компанию в резервный список) and try to get a job with a consulting company ( в консалтинговой компании) instead. The process was a quick one and by January of 2001 I had accepted a full time position (согласился на работу на полный рабочий день) with Diamond Cluster - a Chicago based consulting firm that specialized in providing consulting services (которая специализировалась на предоставлении консалтинговых услуг) to high-tech firms. The job came with a $25,000 signing bonus (поощрительная премия при устройстве на работу) and a $5,000 relocation package (пособие на перемещение внутри страны) to anywhere in the country: they didn't care (им было все равно) where I lived as long as (пока) I was willing (я хотел/был готов) to fly to a new city every week.

The job was supposed to start after graduation (работа должна была начаться после окончания университета) - in July 2001 - but as the year progressed (в течение года), the dotcom bust turned into a nasty recession (Интернет-пузырь превратился в угрожающий экономический спад) that took its toll primarily on (нанес удар прежде всего по) the tech industry. In June my consulting firm called me up and asked to push (передвинуть/перенести) my start date to September. Smelling a rat (чуя неладное), I called up the company that had employed me over the summer the year before, and received from them an offer of full time employment the next day. I explained to them my commitment (обязательство) to join the consulting company in September but they were happy to have me nonetheless (не смотря ни на что) and I felt blessed (счастливым/благословенным).

I was much luckier than (мне повезло больше, чем) many others in my graduating class. A friend relocated (переселился) from California to New Jersey to join (чтобы устроиться в) Lucent, only to receive a call two days prior to his start date telling him to not bother to come in (но за два дня до даты начала работы ему позвонили с просьбой не утруждать себя приездом). A friend accepted an offer with Intel only to be told the entire division had been axed (позже ему сообщили, что все подразделение сокращено). Friends who accepted offers (принявшие предложения) from Conagra, Mattel and a myriad (большого количества) of investment banks all had their job offers rescinded (все столкнулись с аннулированием/отменой предложений) as the downturn intensified (поскольку экономический спад усиливался).

A few days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, I too received a call from Diamond-Cluster and told that my offer had been formally rescinded (официально аннулировано). However (однако), I was allowed to keep (мне позволили оставить себе) my signing bonus and my relocation package. The easiest $30K (тысяч) I had ever made. I was also lucky enough to have a full time job with a small. My career was not going in the direction I had intended (пошла не в том направлении, в котором я планировал) - but this was a problem for another day - for now, I was gainfully employed (выгодно трудоустроен) and enjoying my work.
